No sexual assault charge for high profile attorney

Anytime there is an allegation of rape, authorities must take it seriously. The social stigma connected to both the accuser and the accused can ruin a good reputation. If the accused is convicted, the consequences can be devastating. The stakes become even higher when one or both of the parties are public figures.

Oklahoma residents may have read that Sanford Rubenstein, 70, the sometimes attorney for Reverend Al Sharpton, was recently accused of rape. The allegations stemmed from the alleged sexual assault of a woman involved in Sharpton's National Action Network. The assault was said to take place after Sharpton's birthday party. There is video surveillance showing the two arriving at Rubenstein's apartment. From the start, Rubenstein denied any wrong doing in the matter.

This week, the Manhattan district attorney decided that the seasoned attorney will not face criminal charges. According to a department spokeswoman, the available evidence and the complainant's memory do not create a narrative of provable facts that can support a prosecution. Though sexual assault charges will not be brought against Rubenstein, the investigation has left a negative impact on some of his professional and personal relationships. Most recently, he stepped down from a high profile case in light of the pending investigation.

Anyone who is facing a sexual assault charge in Oklahoma should consider seeking legal counsel. Having an attorney present during the entire investigation may help protect the rights of the accused and ensure that the law is being followed. If a person is formally charged, an attorney will work to get a fair trial for his or her client.
